"Secret, fraternal, beneficiary, and benevolent order" for protection to the needy; founded and instituted in Trenton, N.J., Nov. 9, 1896; membership restricted to white males and females believing in God, aged 18-55. By 1919 the membership age eligibility had been changed to between the ages of 16 and 50. Shepherd's Star Lodge No. 10 of Frenchtown, N.J., operated from 1898 to 1967.
